Dubai has launched a project to revive Al Bastakiya district, one of the most historic landmarks in the emirate.
President of Dubai Event Management Corporation (DEMC) Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Saturday announced that the Corporation had been mandated to revive the district under the directive of the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

A documentary featuring the UAE history was screened here last night at the Emirates Palace. Premised on the archaeological discoveries spanning back to 150,000 years, the film chronologically depicts the development of the UAE society from time immemorial to the present day. The film was screened in the presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research along with a number of officials, intellectuals, academicians and media personnel.

 A treasury of national pride in cyberspace

Fast-fading memories are to be captured online in an archive of the UAE's heritage as part of an initiative launched to celebrate the 36th National Day. National Treasures on watani.tv, a web-based television portal, was created by the national social development programme, Watani. Open to people who have a love for the outdoors, mountains and desert landscapes, archaeology and animals, the Dubai Natural History Group (DNHG) now boasts around 250 members who range from amateur researchers to simple appreciators of species-filled, wide open spaces.

The Zayed University (ZU) and the Centre for Documentation and Research (CDR) have inked an agreement to document the oral history of the UAE. The three-year pact was signed yesterday at the university's campus in Abu Dhabi by Dr Sulaiman Al Jassim, ZU Vice-President and Dr Abdullah Al Reyes, Director of CDR, under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the CDR.

 Al Maktoum tartan re-discovered

A tartan first designed almost 30 years ago for a Pipe band in the United Arab Emirates has been rediscovered and unveiled at a ceremony in Dundees Al-Maktoum Institute. The discovery was made when Institute Principal, Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi was thinking of ideas for new corporate colours.

![]() Conference on Bedouin life in UAE next month

A conference to highlight Bedouin life in the UAE will be organised by the Centre for Documentation and Research (CDR) next month. The conference, titled: 'Bedouin Society in the Emirates: The Reliability of Documents vs. the Accuracy of Narration', will be held in Abu Dhabi from February 26 to March 2.
More than 200 scientists and researchers are expected to take part in the conference. The centre has invited scholars and researchers to submit papers.

It's a relatively quiet Thursday afternoon in Hatta; the odd vehicle zips past with visitors on their way to recharge their batteries at a resort. The dirt track off the asphalt road is winding.  Wilfred Thesiger's death mourned

The death of a great British explorer who became the inspiration of the young and the old alike in Arabia came as a shock for his friends in the UAE and Gulf region. Sir Wilfred Thesiger, who made the UAE his second home, and who made the world share and realise the difficult challenges of the Arab Bedouin desert life, passed away on Sunday, August 24.
