United Arab Emirates and Greece initialled on Tuesday a draft treaty for the avoidance of double taxation on income. The agreement was reached at the end of the first round of negotiations that started in Athena earlier in May. The next round will be held in UAE in September. The third round of negotiations to avoid double taxation between UAE and Japan will begin in Tokyo yesterday. UAE residents will now have to pay taxes on short-term capital gains earned in India, according to the amended provision of the India UAE Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).
According to tax professionals, this amendment has put to rest the confusion created by contradictory verdicts on the issue by various bodies in India in the past.
